More than 70% of all children ages 5-14 ride bicycles.  Children ages 14 and under are five times more likely to be injured in a bicycle related crashes than older riders.  Among children ages 14 and under, more than 80% of fatal bicycle related crashes are associated with the bicyclist’s behavior, including riding into a street without stopping, turning left or swerving into traffic that is coming from behind, and running a stop sign.

The Skills On Wheels program teaches elementary aged children (3rd grade to 6th grade) laws and safety practices associated with riding bicycles.  This program consists of a 30 minute presentation followed by a skills course in which the child will safely ride there bike through a navigation course.  The Skills On Wheels presentation teaches children the importance of wearing a properly fitted helmet, safe riding practices, hand signals and road signs.   These skills are then used in the skills course where riders, wearing a fitted helmet, navigate obstacles and stop at check points to learn and use skills from the presentation, for example proper hand signals.
